School Age Childcare

School AgeThe time gaps before and after school can be empty and lonely for kids, or they can be filled creatively and constructively.

Our safe, well supervised program provides an exciting alternative for children who might otherwise spend hours at home alone.

JoeDear Friends:

The Greater Clark County School System officials recently announced they will be using a different provider for the school-based before-and after-school program. In making their decision they cited a need for a program that aligns with their educational initiatives.

For the past 25 years the YMCA of Southern Indiana has partnered with GCCS to provide this service. The program began in 1982 with less than 50 children and now has expanded to more than 450 children serving nine schools.

Discipline Policy:
All youth programs at the YMCA of Southern Indiana have adopted the “three strikes and you’re out” policy. Strikes are given for severe misbehavior, or persistent behaviors that are deemed inappropriate, dangerous, or contrary to the best interest of participants and staff.

  1. When a strike is issued the child will not be able to return the next day.
  2. After three strikes, the child will not be able to return to the program for six months.
  3. Strike forms must be signed by the parent/guardian and a copy will be issued when the child returns to the program.
  4. Parents/guardians may appeal a strike. A written appeal must be presented to the Site Coordinator, as well as a conference arranged with child, parent/guardian, Site Director, Site Coordinator, and School Age Childcare Director present. The School Age Childcare Director will then render the final decision.
  5. An extended Discipline Policy can be found at all YMCA sites. For further explanation on these policies and procedures, please refer to this manual.

Medication and Sudden Illness:

  1. If medication needs to be administered during the before/after hours the medication must be delivered directly from the parent/guardian to the Site Director.
  2. Medication should be in the original container.
  3. A completed Medication Request form must accompany the medication, and will be kept on file at the program site.
  4. Only daily doses will be accepted. Medication container must be signed in and signed out on a daily basis.
  5. YMCA staff is only allowed to administer basic First Aid - soap, band-aids, water, etc.
  6. If your child falls ill during program times, the Site Director will follow these steps: 1. Attempt to contact parent or guardian. 2. Attempt to contact persons listed as emergency contacts. 3. If necessary, contact ambulance or paramedic. 4. If necessary, transport child to an emergency care facility in the company of a staff member.
  7. Communicable Illness - Parents will be called and arrangements must be made to pick up your child.
  8. Lice outbreaks occur seasonally. The YMCA has a nit free policy. Random lice checks may be given by staff members at the Site Director’s request.
  9. Each child must have had either the chicken pox or the vaccine. Please make sure the date is on your registration form.

Things to Remember:

  1. Bi-Monthly Parent Newsletters are sent out to help keep you updated on upcoming events, dates and activities going on in the program
  2. Questions - Site Directors will be happy to help you with any questions you may have. Sites will be divided into four districts, each having their own site coordinator. Site coordinators may be reached by phone at the YMCA.
  3. Personal Belongings are the responsibility of the child and should be labeled with your child’s name and placed at the site’s designated area.
  4. Toys and Games - We ask that you do not permit your child to bring toys and games (including electronics) to the site. Items will be held for parent/guardian pick up. We cannot be held responsible for damage or loss.

Payments:

  1. Two types of payments are accepted - full time and daily.
  2. Payments must be set up as automatic draft.
  3. 2 weeks of unpaid childcare will result in the termination of your childcare until payment arrangements have been made through the SACC director.

Inclement Weather:

  1. Decisions to close are made by the School-Age Childcare Director for the safety of all the children and staff. Closing information will be on local news stations.
  2. The YMCA will do what is possible to remain open; however we must respect decisions made by the collaborating school systems.
  3. Parents should check back with the YMCA during the course of the day for updates as to any early closings or time changes pending threatening weather conditions.
  4. Morning school delays - the YMCA will provide a snack for your child or they may bring their own breakfast if they are not able to eat before coming.
